What is One Tree Orchard? The One Tree Orchard is an ecologically-sensitive, community-minded neighbourhood which seeks to minimize its impact on the natural world.
Partnered with the Province of New Brunswick, this innovative 'Ecovillage' will be a showcase of new sustainable technologies and practices which will allow it's residents and the greater community to live more harmoniously with their acadian-forest environment.
By design, a minimum of fifty percent of the buildable land area will be preserved as wildlife habitat and as public recreational areas. A system of trails and an ecological park is being designed for the use of the greater Fredericton/Kingsclear community. It is our aim for this park/trail system to be an educational resource to highlight and inform it's users of the beauty, fragility and individuality of the acadian forest.
The One Tree Orchard is found in IslandView just outside the city limits of Fredericton, New Brunswick. This neighbourhood will enjoy a direct link to the capital city via the valley walking and cycling trail. It is accessible by local transit and it is also with a short drive to city centre.
As part of our commitment to reducing our impact upon our rapidly changing world, we seek to reduce the need for vehicle traffic. As we all know, vehicle commuting is a large contributor to greenhouse gases in our airways. The One Tree Orchard will be host to:
- office and retail space
- child and aged care facilities
- shared agricultural areas
- community meeting/recreational spaces
- inclusive worship space
This will reduce the need for vehicle travel and increase the strength and autonomy of our community.
The One Tree Orchard will maximise it's use of locally derived energy and heating sources. To support local industry, the One Tree Orchard will source its building materials locally and will utilise healthy alternative building materials to create housing that exceed the current R-2000 standard of energy efficiency.
